A hip replacement system known as the Zimmer Durom Acetabular Device was designed with young, active patients who would outlive other hip replacement systems in mind. With over 12,000 systems implanted, one doctor discovered that the Durom Cups were allegedly causing radiolucent lines to develop and found one patient whose Cup migrated into varus. The same doctor also believes that a circular cutting surface on the edge of the cup could prevent the cup from fully settling. Zimmer has suspended sales of the cup, and the failure rate will only continue to increase.
